CAUTIONARY TALES

Cautionary Tales is an embroidery project with hidden messages within historical events.

My textiles practice combines surface design and embroidery. I stitch graphic imagery to tell a story. I am interested in showing the passage of time and connecting my work to history. I work with deception by hiding messages within the embroidery by changing the direction of the thread.

These works concentrate on different historical events of things that choke someone. I found inspiration through World War II propaganda posters, second-hand personal domestic violence accounts, and historical records of trail scripts of the Salem witch trials to create the imagery. This bodiless garment connects three voices of the assaulted. They are suspended from the ceiling and looming over the viewer to be ghost-like and ceremonial. The proportions of the dress and especially the neck shape are made unwearable to emphasize the areas that are affected when choking. These works investigate a retelling of horrible events and circumstances

IS THIS FLAT?

Anchor 2

Is it Flat? was created by layering printed expanding circles on silk organize to create the illusion of a tunnel

This started by taking one black punched circle of paper and building outwards with different colored circles and taking a picture of each section. Then using a huge printer and a roll of silk organza each photo was printed on the fabric, then assembled in a tunnel-like fashion. There are other experiments on here as well to see how you could create depth out of something that was flat.

WATCHING

Watching is an exploration of the similarities in patterns and colors among different species.

Using different techniques to try and recreate different textures of different species of birds, butterflies, and fish and to find the similarities in their colors and patterns. Then they are displayed like an etymology study
